sie sind bunt, sie sind verspielt und sie nehmen menschliche schwächen aufs korn, man könnte auch von comicgewordener kritik an der gesellschaft sprechen. paul mühlbauer ist ein satiriker, der keine worte braucht. die kunsthistorikerin eva maltrovsky schreibt über ihn: „die schillernde palette der kritischen beobachtung von skurrilität, satire und witz im werk paul mühlbauers wird noch ergänzt durch den aspekt der ironie. ironie ist, zurückzutreten und die ereignisse mit einer gewissen distanz zu betrachten. das schmunzeln dabei hat sicher auch kathartischen charakter.“
der künstler arbeitet bevorzugt mit bronze, das material verleiht den schmalen, hochgeschossenen figuren stabilität. jede seiner skulpturen ist ein unikat, das von hand bemalt wird. gelegentlich integriert paul mühlbauer in den herstellungsprozess auch ansätze aus der kunstgeschichte, wie beispielsweise die idee des „ready made“.
